According to the National Statistical Institute (IBGE), industrial
production grew 2.4% in 2002, which was up from the 1.6% growth rate
observed in 2001. The strongest sectoral expansions in 2002 were
registered in tobacco, mechanical equipment, and mineral extraction, where
output grew 22.8%,10.7% and 8.7% respectively. The strongest
declines in activity were experienced in electrical and leather goods
output, which saw activity decline 11.8% and 3.9% respectively.
