The
National Statistical Institute (IBGE,
Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) reports:
The
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 3.4% in real terms in the
fourth quarter compared with the same period in 2001.
The third quarter figure represented a healthy improvement in economic
activity over the third quarter, when growth reached 2.5%.
According to seasonally adjusted data, the Brazilian GDP increased by 0.7% over
the fourth quarter this year.
Despite
the strong fourth quarter reading, economic activity for the year remained
subdued with GDP growing only 1.5%, following a meagre 1.4% in 2001.
Annual data show that growth was propelled by strong the agricultural
sector, which saw activity rise 5.79% over 2001. Meanwhile, activity
in the industry and services sectors remained subdued with 1.52% and 1.49%
expansions respectively.
