The
National Statistical Institute (INEGI, Instituto Nacional de
Estadística Geografía e Informática) reports:
The
Monthly Indicator for Economic Activity (IGAE,
Indicador Global de la Actividad Económica) registered an increase
of 4.0% in real terms compared with the same month last year. The
result was influenced by the fact that Easter fell in April last year and
in March this year. Consequently, April 2002 had more working days
than April last year (26 working days in 2002 compared to 22 working days
in 2001).
According to seasonally adjusted data, economic activity added 0.89% over
the preceding month.
On a
sectoral basis, the results were as follows: Agriculture experienced an
increase of 1.8% compared to April last year; industry grew 8.0% and the
service sector advanced 2.8%.
INEGI
highlights the results are preliminary and do not comprise all activities
incorporated in the calculation of quarterly Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Therefore, the results should serve only as a trend indicator or as an
indication about the direction of the economy in the short term.
