The numbers in detail

 

In December, retail sales declined 1.4% in real terms compared to the same month last year.  The December reading represents an improvement compared to November, when retail sales decreased by an annual 2.2% rate.  According to seasonal adjusted data, retail sales added 0.98% over the preceding month.
